A proud history of migration and community

First settled by migrants seeking refuge from hard times in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales from 1837, the area originally grew around what became known as Pentridge Prison, established from December 1850.

Since then the area has evolved to capture the very best of what our state has to offer: multiculturalism. Generations of culturally and linguistically diverse migrants have called Pascoe Vale home following the end of the Second World War, including many of Italian, Greek, Lebanese, Turkish and Maltese heritage, with newer arrivals increasingly coming from India, Nepal, Pakistan, China, South-East Asia and South America.

With almost 50 percent of local residents having parents who were born overseas, the electorate's Central Coburg, Sydney Road and Upfield corridors continue to remain a cultural heartbeat of Melbourne's northern suburbs.

Whilst previous generations of residents played a major role in building and weaving together modern-day Victoria, today's residents are increasingly caring for and serving our community, with many employed across health, social and community services, education and training, professional, technological and scientific services, the visitor economy and transport industries.

As a proud, hardworking and culturally diverse electorate with a strong sense of community pride that has always punched above its weight, the people of Pascoe Vale, Coburg and Brunswick West continue to make a major contribution to the socio-economic prosperity of Victoria.
